Chime Card Review

Last reviewed / updated October 10, 2026

The current Chime Card is a secured Visa card that spends money available through a Chime Checking Account. The basic card has no routine monthly or annual card fee and does not charge interest, but you must pay your full monthly statement (or enable Safer Credit Building). It reports qualifying card activity to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Older Chime Credit Builder is closed to new enrollments; Plus and Prime are free deposit-qualified statuses, not paid subscription tiers.

Base, Plus and Prime are FREE conditional Chime membership statuses, NOT separate paid card subscriptions. A Chime Checking Account and funded available balance are required. Eligibility

    • 18+ with eligible US residence/identification
    • Chime Checking Account in good standing
    • No hard inquiry advertised for the basic secured card
    • Full statement repayment; Safer Credit Building optional
    • Separate qualifications for Plus/Prime deposits and optional loans

Know which Chime Card you're getting

Current Chime Card, its optional deposit-qualified benefits and interest-bearing separate borrowing products are not interchangeable.

Current Chime Card, not legacy Credit Builder

The newer secured Visa spends Chime-funded money through one Available balance. Legacy Credit Builder is closed to new enrollment.

$0 basic card and $0 membership statuses

Base, Plus and Prime do not charge regular membership fees. Rewards/status depend on qualifying deposits; optional services or metal design cost extra.

Reporting requires payments, not just funding

Chime reports card history monthly to all three bureaus. Paying your statement in full matters; Safer Credit Building may automate it.

    Current-product and eligibility reminder

Chime Checking is required. Plus/Prime require eligible deposits and do not guarantee approval for Credit Line, rent furnishing or other features. Don't mistake the no-fee secured card for interest-bearing Credit Line borrowing or the discontinued Credit Builder enrollment flow. AIOC has no approved Chime affiliate tracking link confirmed in its current tracker.

Who It May Be Best For

People who want to build payment history with a card usable at regular Visa merchants, can safely fund planned spending, will maintain a Chime Checking Account and can repay card statements in full. A no-fee base status can be enough; spending more to chase Prime is not inherently beneficial.

    Who May Want Another Option

Chime Card is not an unsecured spending limit or emergency loan. It may not fit someone unwilling to open Checking, unable to keep money funded and make on-time statement payments, or needing a conventional reported credit limit to affect revolving utilization. Chime's separate borrowing offers are not a substitute for an affordable basic card.

    How It Works

Open eligible Chime Checking and qualify for the secured Visa. Chime Card uses one Available balance for Checking and card access and automatically allocates amounts to secure card spending. Funding is not a statement payment: after using the card you must pay the monthly statement, either manually or through optional Safer Credit Building. Chime sends eligible payment activity to the three major credit bureaus monthly. The older Credit Builder had a different two-balance setup and is closed to new applicants.

    Pricing and Fees

Current basic Chime Card has no routine monthly fee, annual fee or purchase interest and no fixed minimum security deposit. Base, Plus and Prime membership statuses each cost $0, but Plus and Prime require qualifying incoming deposits in a rolling previous 34-day window. Plus: one eligible deposit of at least $200 OR cumulative qualifying deposits of at least $400. Prime: cumulative qualifying deposits of at least $3,000. Optional titanium-colored metal card costs up to $50 plus tax. Out-of-network ATM/OTC fees can be $2.50 plus operator fees; separate expedited transfers, MyPay, Instant Loans and Credit Line have distinct fees or APR. Avoid saying all Chime services are free.

    Credit Bureau Reporting

Chime states basic Chime Card activity is submitted at the beginning of each month to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Bureau processing may take weeks; there is no verified signup-to-first-report guarantee or guaranteed score gain. The basic card reports payment history without a preset credit limit, so no assumption that a $500 funded balance adds $500 to a traditional revolving credit limit. Late/nonpayment can hurt. Separately verified Boom rent reporting may furnish eligible rent to all three; optional Experian Boost is not all-bureau card payment furnishing.

    Eligibility

Applicants generally must be 18+, meet residency/identity requirements and open/maintain Chime Checking. Basic Card marketing advertises no hard credit inquiry, but identity and account screening still applies. The old Credit Builder $200 direct-deposit enrollment rule is NOT a universal current-card requirement. Eligible payroll, gig and benefits deposits can qualify for Plus/Prime; ordinary account transfers and cash deposits do not automatically count. Credit Line, MyPay, loans and other services have separate eligibility.

    Important Limitations

Funded secured spending is not new borrowed cash, and the card requires full monthly statement repayment. Safer Credit Building must be set up if you want automatic statement payments. A checking relationship is mandatory; closing it can affect card access. Plus/Prime rewards only apply when status and selected category requirements are met. Credit reporting may take time, with no guaranteed score results. An optional metal card does not improve bureau furnishing. Separate Credit Line borrowing can incur APR and a minimum payment and is not broadly available. Card closure and secured-balance access follow bank agreements.

    Alternatives

Self offers a different held-proceeds installment Credit Builder Account, with finance costs and potential release of held principal. Kikoff's tradeline plans start at $5/month and can only be used for Kikoff products and services. Kovo's $10/month 24-month program finances services; it does not release loan money. Perpay's unsecured Mastercard is a separate fee-bearing borrowing product rather than the same no-interest funded-spending arrangement. If you already have healthy credit accounts, another tradeline may not be needed.

    Final Summary

Chime Card offers ordinary Visa spending backed by funded money, monthly furnishing to three major credit bureaus and no basic monthly or annual card fee. The core tradeoffs are required Chime Checking, full statement payments and no furnished preset limit. Plus/Prime are deposit-qualified free statuses, not a reason to spend more. Check whether you want the current basic Chime Card—not the discontinued enrollment funnel—and verify current provider terms before applying.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the old Chime Credit Builder still available?

Older Credit Builder accounts may be supported for existing members, but Chime Card is the currently marketed secured Visa; new visitors should use the current Chime Card flow.

Does the Chime Card have a monthly fee?

The basic card has no routine monthly or annual fee. Chime, Chime Plus and Chime Prime are $0 deposit-qualified statuses, not paid subscriptions. Other optional services, ATM activity or metal design may cost money.

Do I need direct deposit to qualify?

The current basic card does not have the old Credit Builder $200 direct-deposit enrollment requirement. Chime Checking and individual approval are required. Eligible deposit activity is needed to earn Plus/Prime status and associated benefits.

How do I pay the Chime Card statement?

Funding Checking and the secured account does not count as paying the monthly statement. Make full payments or turn on the optional Safer Credit Building payment feature.

When does Chime report my payments?

Chime says it submits eligible basic-card activity to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion at the beginning of each month. The bureau may take additional weeks to display it. Signup-to-visible timing and score gains are not guaranteed.

Will funding $500 increase my reported credit limit?

Not necessarily. The basic card does not furnish a preset credit limit, so you should not assume funded spending adds to the denominator of revolving credit utilization.

Do Chime Plus and Prime cost more?

No regular membership fee. Plus requires an eligible deposit of at least $200 or $400 total over the previous 34 days; Prime requires $3,000 total eligible deposits. Cashback benefits require monthly category selection, merchant qualification and limits.

Does the Chime Card offer a loan or credit line?

Its basic secured spending uses money you have funded. Optional Credit Line, MyPay or Instant Loans are separate products requiring additional qualification and possibly APR or delivery fees.
